In the good old days, when us Californians were still governed by our aptly named dreary Governor Gray, the first lady was a frequent speaker at events such as this one. I don't remember her name (of course), maybe "Kitty" or something. In any case, now that we have the Governator, he is too high-profile, and his first lady is WAY too high profile to be seen at little workshops like this one.
Since my plane was cancelled and all of us were stuck on the later flight, the plane was FULL and my third row aisle seat was magically transformed into a MIDDLE seat in the BACK row. Yes--the infamous "back", where everybody else’s seat reclines and you are left sitting perfectly vertical. I managed to get a 500 mile credit on my account, but what does that get me? Not even enough for a hop to Las Vegas.
Eight hours after I left home, I arrived in lovely downtown Sacramento, where everything was CLOSED of course, but managed to get some incredibly good warm brie and pears at the bar to ease my pain. Had a Johnny Walker with it, should have had a Mums if I had known how good those pears and cheese were going to be (and this for only seven dollars! That would put LA to shame!)
Anyway, because of poor planning, a last minute trip, Janet and I are sharing a room since I missed the window for the conference rate, but this turned out to be fortuitous because this is a hell of a room! I am sitting (lying down to be exact) in a very comfortable window seat gazing out at an unexpectedly lovely view of the area. We have the 23rd floor, and two queen beds, two window seats (!!), internet access and (get this) the Wall Street Journal delivered at the door. I am VERY comfortable. Who needs Prague? Oh well, I suppose since my conference convenes in four minutes, I ought to be getting downstairs to registration (sigh). Really hate to leave this room.
